CONFIGURE ALERT NOTIFICATION CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBERS IN SCOM

In my previous post we created and configured alert notification action account. Now in order to send alert notification to subscribers using email we need to configure below:

  1. Notification Channel.
  2. Subscribers.
  3. Subscriptions.

So, before we start, we should have below information:

  1. SMTP Server FQDN.
  2. SMTP Server Port Number.
  3. Return email address. (It can be anything like: test@test.com)

Configure Notification Channel

  1. Load up Operations Manager console and click on Administration.
  2. Under Notifications right click Channels.
  3. Click New Channel and select “E-Mail (SMTP)…

1

  1. Give SMTP Channel a suitable name and click Next.

2

  1. In Settings page click on Add.
  2. Provide SMTP FQDN.
  3. Provide SMTP Port number (By default its 25).
  4. Leave Authentication method Anonymous and click OK.

We can add one or more additional servers to act like backup servers. If the primary SMTP is unavailable, notifications are sent through the secondary server.

3

  1. Provide Return Address. We can give any name here, it’s not required to be the real email address.
  2. Leave Retry interval (min) to 5.

If we have only one SMTP server and it’s unavailable, the Retry interval has no effect. The Retry interval is used when we have a secondary server and mail sending to the primary server fails. When this happens, Operations Manager switches to the secondary server and checks the Retry interval time. If the Retry interval time has passed, Operations Manager tries to use the primary server.

  1. Click Next to continue.

4

  1. In Format page specify the E-mail subject and E-mail message text or leave the default selections.
  2. Select the Importance level and then specify the Encoding type.
  3. Click Finish and Close to close the E-Mail Notification Channel Wizard.

5

Now we have configured Notification Channel however in order to send the alerts through email we need to add the recipient email IDs or group in SCOM.

In order to achieve this, we need to configure Subscribers.

Subscribers

  1. Load up Operations Manager console and click on Administration.
  2. Under Notifications click New subscriber.

6

  1. Provide Subscriber Name and click Next.

7

  1. In Schedule page leave the default settings and click Next.

We can specify the schedule accordingly when email needs to be sent to this address.

13

  1. In Addresses page, click on Add.

14

  1. Provide a suitable name under Address name row.
  2. Click Next.

15

  1. Under Channel page, select E-Mail (SMTP) from Channel Type dropdown menu.
  2. Provide recipient email address at which alert email notification needs to be sent.
  3. Click Next to continue.

16

  1. In Schedule page, leave the default option and click Finish.

We can specify the schedule when the email needs to be sent to this specific email address.

17

In Addresses page, we can see the subscriber delivery addresses.

  1. Click Finish and Close to close the wizard.

18

Will cover up how to configure alert email subscription in my next post.
