SCOM 2012 R2 – SQL Server installation Step by Step

If you are planning to install SCOM application, the first thing which needs to be done before running the SCOM setup will be the SQL Server installation.

Make sure you have installed the .NET Framework 3.5 before starting the SQL Server installation otherwise you will get the installation error. You can install .NET Framework 3.5 from Add Roles and Features under Server Manager Dashboard.

Also, make sure you select the supported SQL Version for SCOM installation. You may refer below link for same:

Let’s start..

1: Extract or Mount the SQL Server ISO and run Setup.exe

SQL Server Installation Center page will open.


2: Click on Installation option.

3: Click the New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation link.


Setup Support Rules will check for pre-installation issues.

4: Make sure all the Rules are in Passed status, click OK to continue.


5: Enter the product key and click Next to continue.


6: Accept the license terms and click Next.


If your server has Internet Connection, setup will check for available updates and will download the updates to use during installation.

7: Include SQL Server production updates and click Next to continue.


8: Setup will again check the Setup Support Rules, Click Next if there are no failures.


9: Select SQL Server Feature Installation and click Next.


10: Select below Features and click Next.

  • Database Engine Services
  • Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search
  • Reporting Services – Native
  • Management Tools – Basic and Complete (For running the queries and SQL services Configuration)


11: Installation Rules will check if there’s anything to block the installation. Click Next if there are no Failures.


Under Instance Configuration you can either select Default Instance or provide Named instance.

12: Select Default instance and click Next to continue.


13: Review the disk space summary and click Next if its reported OK.


Under Server Configuration page, specify the service accounts and collation configuration.

As a best practice, it’s advised to have a separate Service Account for each Service. Since this installation is for the demo purpose will leave the Account Name as default.

14: Change the SQL Server Agent service Startup Type to Automatic.


15: Click on Collation tab and make sure SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS Database Engine is selected.

16: Click Next to continue.


17: Select Authentication Mode to Mixed Mode and provide sa account password.

18: Click Add Current User button to add the user through which installation is being done as SQL Server Administrator.

Alternately you can add specific users or SQL Administrator group under SQL Server administration option.

19: Click Next to continue.


20: Select Install and configure option under Reporting Services Native Mode.

21: Click Next to continue.


If you want to send Error Reports to Microsoft, put check mark on the option.

22: Click Next to continue.


23: Installation Configuration Rules will do a final check, click Next if there are no Failures.


24: Verify the SQL Server features to be installed and click Install button.


Now sit back and relax, installation might take few minutes to complete based upon your server performance.

25: Make sure all the Features are installed with Succeeded Status, click Close button to close the setup window.


SQL Server installation is complete and we are good to go for SCOM Application installation.
