Installing DPM Protection Agent Manually

In continuation to my previous post Push DPM Protection Agent – Step by Step, today I will show you how to install DPM Protection Agent Manually on the computer.

There may be scenarios wherein the computer may be behind firewall or the DPM Agent is already installed on the computer. In such scenarios we can discover the computer under DPM console through Attach agents option.

Selecting this option will add the protected computers to the DPM server. If you have not already installed the Agent then you must manually install it on the protected computer by executing the DPMAgentInstaller file.

The DPM Agent Installation file can be copied on protected computers from below location on DPM Server:

%SystemDrive%\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\ProtectionAgents\RA\4.2.1205.0\amd64

1

Once the DPM installation file is copied on protected computer follow below steps:

1: Right click DPMAgentInstaller_x64 file and select Run as Administrator.

2: Accept the license terms and conditions and click OK.

2

The installation will complete within few seconds.

3: Press Enter key to close the installer window.

3

4: Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

5: Configure the firewall settings by running below command:

SetDpmServer.exe –dpmServerName <DPM SERVER FQDN>

For example:
SetDpmServer.exe –dpmServerName Contoso-DPM.contoso.local

Where Contoso-DPM.contoso.local is the actual DPM server name.

The SetDpmServer.exe can be located under below folder:

%SystemDrive%\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin

4

The firewall exception will be applied and you should get Configuration computed successfully message.

6: Close the Command Prompt window.

5

7: Open DPM Console and click on Agents tab under Management task area.

8: Click on Install option.

6

9: Select Attach agents option, make appropriate selection and click Next.

7

The protected computer on which DPM Agent was installed should be visible in the list.

10: Select the computer and click Add button.

11: Click Next button to continue.

8

On the Enter Credentials page, type the user name and password for a domain account that is a member of the local Administrators group on all selected computers.

12: Click Next button to continue.

9

13: Click Attach button on Summary page to continue.

10

The installation should be completed within few seconds with Success Result.

14: Click Close button to close the Installation Wizard.

11

That’s it.

The protected computer should be visible in Agents tab under Management task area.

12

Hope this helps.
